I don’t think Japan will benefit overall from hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics for the following reasons.

Firstly, hosting the Olympics will cost Japan a lot of money. This money should be used in more important areas such as education, health care and unemployment. Due to the sluggish economy, the number of poor people has been increasing in recent years, so the government have a responsibility to subsidize the needy rather than spend large amounts of money just to enhance the country’s global profile.

Secondly, Hosting the Summer Olympics requires construction of sports facilities, stadiums and train stations. All of which will not only drain the taxpayers’ pockets, but also has added possibility of these infrastructure falling into disuse and disrepair after the Olympics.

Finally, it will bring inconvenience to the citizens. Public transport for example will be more crowded and many sporting events may disrupt people’s daily routines. As a result public places will become noisy and traffic jams will be more frequent.

For the reasons just mentioned, I don’t believe it is beneficial for Japan to hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics.
