I consider there are two factors causing(forcing) the agricultural sector of Japan to be in decline. I will explain.

Firstly, I believe a lack of the workforce in farming is the main reason. Due to the declining birth rate in Japan, fewer and fewer young people are engaged in farming. Many youngsters think farming is not lucrative and so they move to urban areas. In the Countryside only older people are growing crops and consequently the productivity is decreasing, which has led to this sector shrinking.

Secondly, I feel high labor costs also impact on the Japanese agricultural sector’s competitiveness. Because of globalization, a lot of agricultural products from abroad flow into the local markets. They are usually cheaper than domestic commodities. As a result, consumers choose to buy imported vegetables and fruit instead of those grown locally, Which adversely affects the profitability of the agricultural sector of Japan.

In conclusion, I believe that labor shortages and costs are the reasons for the decline of this sector in Japan.
