With advances in medical science, the increasing life expectancy would normally be considered as beneficial for that individual. However, I think there are two negative effects on modern society. In this essay I will elaborate my opinion.

Firstly, It will increase the burden to governments’ budget. Governments have to spend a lot of money on healthcare and pension for the aged. For example Japan is facing low birth rates, as a result fewer and fewer people are paying into healthcare insurance and pension funds. This has resulted in welfare expenditure towards aging people becoming a big financial burden upon the government budget.

Secondly increasing life spans has led to living space decreasing, which has disrupted the balance of ecosystem. For example, some countries in Asia and Africa have already allowed people to live in the natural reserve due to overpopulation. This has forced some animals to migrate to other places.

In conclusion, I feel increasing life spans cannot be said to have positive effects in every respect in modern society.
