Donald Trump（トランプ大統領）がWhite HouseのRose Gardenで開かれたpress briefing（記者会見）でCBS社の記者の質問に対して人種差別的な対応をしたとするニュース（『’Don’t ask me. Ask China’: Trump clashes with reporters then abruptly leaves press briefing』）です。質問をしたのは同社のホワイトハウス担当記者であるWeijia Jiang女史です。彼女はXiamen（廈門：アモイ）生まれの中国系アメリカ人です。２歳の時に家族と共に渡米しました。今回の質問はアメリカでのCoronavirus（新型コロナウイルス）のテスト数が他国と比較して多いことを強調するトランプ大統領に対して投げられました。具体的には「死亡者も感染者数も増えているなかでどうして世界と張り合うのか？」というものです。これに対してトランプ大統領は「世界中で人が命を失っている。そんな質問は中国にすべきだ。中国なら珍奇な回答をするだろう」と返しております。

検査数が多いと言っても人口一人当たりで計算しますと依然として低い状態です。また、トランプ政権でも引き続き死亡者は伸びるとする試算を出しており、最近はホワイトハウス内でも感染者が出ております。そのような状況ではありますが、今回の質問に対して冷静に対応できなかった大統領に対してアメリカ国内だけでなく世界からも冷ややかな目を向けられております。

Weijia Jiang女史：“Why is this a global competition to you if every day Americans are still losing their lives and we are still seeing more cases every day?”

トランプ大統領：“Well, they are losing their lives everywhere in the world. Maybe that is a question you should ask China. Don’t ask me. Ask China that question. When you ask China that question you may get a very unusual answer.”

Weijia Jiang女史： “Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically?”

トランプ大統領：“I am not saying it specifically to anybody. I am saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that.”

Weijia Jiang女史：“That is not a nasty question.”
